Authority from Old Testament • Violations met with swift reaction • Cain did not have to wait for the final judgment to learn whether his worship was accepted or rejected by God Gen. 4:5 • Nadab and Abihu did not wonder long if an alternative fire was acceptable Lev. 10:1-2 • Uzzah did not have the time to speculate about his good intentions when he touched the ark of the covenant II Sam. 6:6-7
Joshua’s Generation • Greatest time in Israel’s history as they had the greatest respect for God’s authority 1:8 • Judges was worst period Judges 21:25 • Joshua 1-12 battles in Canaan • Joshua 13-21 division of land to tribes • Joshua 22 Reuben, Gad, and half of Manasseh return to the East of Jordan
1-4 Commends 5 Warning 6-8 Blessing 9-10 Reuben, Gad, and Manasseh built an altar near the Jordan River 11- 20 Conflict 21-33 Response Joshua 22
Conflict: Josh. 22:11-20 • 11-12 All gathered at Shiloh to prepare for war • Even the other half of Manasseh • Even though they fought side by side before • Even though they were tired of war • Loyalty to God and respect for His authority came first • Issue was offering sacrifices on another altar
Conflict: Josh. 22:11-20 • 13-20 Messengers before the battle • 16 charged with rebellion (response) • 17 remember Peor (Phinehas) • 18 consequences to all • 19 offer own land to resolve problem • 20 remember Achan (one sin contaminates all and brings God’s wrath)
Response: Josh. 22:21-33 • 21-23 God knows this is not rebellion • 24-29 Altar was built because: • In future your children may reject ours 24-25 • Jordan is natural border (can become barrier) • Altar reveals fellowship between us 26-27 • “Behold the pattern” 28 • No sacrifices offered 26, 28, 29 • Satisfied messengers 30-33
Lessons to Learn • Loyalty to God must come first • even if our brother errs • even if we were companions in other battles • even if we have grown tired of the conflicts • When addressing suspected sin • make the charge clear • remind the sinner of the consequences to all • be willing to sacrifice to restore the erring
Lessons to Learn • Loyalty to God must come first • Properly address suspected sin • Parents provide for children’s faith • A simple border to us may become a tremendous barrier to future generations • To reveal our fellowship with one another and God we must follow the divine pattern
