The communication of a biblical concept, derived from and transmitted through a historical, grammatical, and literary study of a passage in its context, which the Holy Spirit first applies to the personality and experience of the preacher, then through him to his hearers. (Haddon Robinson, Biblical Preaching, 20). EXPOSITORY PREACHING

  3. Advantages of Expository Preaching • Places the Scriptures in a pre-eminent position. • Helps the preacher to avoid majoring in the minors. • Directs the congregation back to the Bible.

  4. Why preach from the Old Testament? It’s old, isn’t it? • Jesus did! • Luke 24:13-27 • John 5:39 • The Bible is a progressive revelation. • Adam – Noah – Abraham – Jacob – Moses – Samuel – David – Solomon – Isaiah – Malachi: God reveals, further explains what He has revealed, modifies a previous revelation, or supercedes a previous revelation • Galatians 3:17-19

Why preach from the OT? • Jewish customs - mentioned in passing in the NT (Matthew 16:18, Gen. 19:1, Ruth 4:1, Job 29:7, Esther 2:21: What do these have in common?) • Fulfilled prophecies • Full of stories of people with problems • Wisdom writings – assumed by the NT writers • Full of signs pointing to the person and work of Christ
