Fact vs. Opinion • Fact – • Can be proven • Ex: John has blue eyes. • Opinion • Thought; feeling; belief; cannot be proven • Ex: Blue eyes are better than brown ones.
Objective vs. Subjective • Objective • Without opinion • A judges ruling in a court is objective. He weighs the facts. His opinions don’t matter. • Subjective • With opinion • Who in the courtroom presents the facts in a subjective manner? • The Lawyers, of course • Is the referee in a football game objective or subjective? • Hopefully he is objective, unless he is rooting for Clovis High School
Tone • An author can have an objective tone (attitude) or a subjective tone. • Can you tell me in which tone the following sentences are written? • If my lazy students would just do their stinkin’ homework, the little whiners would pass my class. • If my students would do their homework, they would pass my class. • What words make the first sentence subjective? • Lazy, stinkin’, little whiners
Connotation vs. Denotation • Connotation • The meaning of a word based on feelings or emotions. Connotation can be positive, negative, or neutral. This is a more subjective meaning. • Denotation • This is simply the dictionary definition • What are the connotations of the following words? Devilish Angel Jacket Healthy Candy What if you are a diabetic? • The context of a word can change it’s connotation.
Connotation Continued • My blue wardrobe only fits when my heart is low and my tears are many. • My blue wardrobe only fits when I have lots a few pounds. • What is the connotation of the word “blue” in each sentence? • Blue means sad and has a negative connotation • Blue means the color and has a neutral connotation
