The world has moved away from the Death Penalty • International Human Rights Movement • UDHR, ICCPR • The United States is the only Western nation and the only democracy with capital punishment • Executions in 2010: • China – 1700 – 6000 • Iran – 388 • Saudi Arabia - 69 • USA – 46 (1234 executions since 1976)

The United States is Moving Away from the Death Penalty • Illinois abolished capital punishment yesterday. • New Jersey (2007), New Mexico (2009) • Maryland, Montana, Connecticut, Kansas, and Florida are considering legislation abolishing capital punishment. • In states with capital punishment, death sentences and executions are at an all time low.
