Modifiers: Precise Meanings • Adjective: answer the question what kind? Which one? How many? Or how much? • Adverbs: answer the question where? When? How often? In what way? Or to what extent?
Character & Allusion • Character traits: a character’s personality, values, likes, and dislikes • Allusions: references to features of a culture—for example, to literature and history—that writers expect their readers to recognize • Subordinate Characters: add depth and complication to the plot • Motivation: is what drives a character’s actions; it explains behavior and reveals personality
Character & Allusion • Flat Character: only has one or two character traits • Round Character: a figure who has several sides to his/her personality • Dynamic Character: a character that grows or changes (usually change of attitude or behavior) • Static Character: character that doesn’t progress or change; at the end of the story they are unchanged
Inferences • Inference: an educated guess based on clues in the text, such as a character’s actions and words
