2500 years ago, the Celts living in the great Britain believed that human is mastered by gods. They also believed that the death god, Samhain, would come back to the earthly world with the dead at the night on October 31.
They believed that when the Lord of Death came, many evil spirits came with him, too.
There were different kinds of evil spirits, such as goblins, ghosts, witches and vampires.
In order to appease the wandering spirits, the Celtic priests made fires in which they burned sacrifices, made charms, and cast spells.
Some Celts were dressed in costumes and masks made from animals’ heads or furs, which was the origin of Halloween masked balls.
The Christians called November 1 All Hallow’s Day, the day of All Saints. The evening of October 31 was called Hallows’ Eve. This became Halloween.
On Halloween, American children take their costumes and masks to school. Halloween costumes are the witch, ghost, skeleton, or vampire.
On Halloween evening, American and British children and teenagers go “trick- or- treating.”
