  2. Amazon Rain Forest • The Amazon Rainforest is found mainly in the country of Brazil • The Rainforest covers 1.4 billion acres of land • The Amazon represents over half of the planet's remaining rainforests

  3. Francisco Pizarro • Conquered the Inca Empire in 1533 • Was the first European to view the Pacific Ocean from the New World in 1513 • Founded the city of Lima, Peru • Pizarro was a conquistador

  4. The Incas • The Incan civilization existed mostly in what is now Peru • Civilization was founded in the early 1200’s by Manco Capac • The Incas worshipped many gods, but the sun was the focus of their lives

  5. Language of South America The two most commonly spoken languages in South America are Spanish and Portuguese

  6. South America Terrain • South America is mainly made up of mountains and plains • While there is one desert and the Amazon rainforest, the majority of the country is made up of mountains and vast plains.

  7. Machu Picchu • Famous Incan city in Peru now laying in ruins. • Machu Picchu was built as an estate for the Inca emperor Pachacuti around 1450 • Undiscovered until the early 1900’s

  8. Independence • Brazil won its independence peacefully in 1822 • Very little fighting actually took place • Casualties only numbered about 6,000 • The new nations set up Republics. • French Guiana is the only South American country that is not Independent it belongs to France

  9. Soccer • Soccer is the national sport of South America • Soccer is to South America what football is to North America • Yes, I know that soccer is called futbol in South America

  10. Andes Mountains • Located on the west side of South America. • Runs from north to south across the entire length of the continent • The Andes are the largest mountain system in the world

  11. Amazon River • The Amazon River is used for fishing, drinking water, and as a transportation corridor. • The second longest river in the world. • There are no bridges that cross the river.

  12. PANAMACANAL • The Panama Canal is a important waterway for world trade. • The Panama Canal connects the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean, using a system of locks. • Spain first thought about building a canal • France started building the Panama Canal • In 1914 The United States finished the Panama Canal

  13. South America The first Country you enter if you walk from Mexico to South America is?.......... What 3 Countries does the Equator cross?........
