  1. Using Compositional Software in High School Theory Classrooms A presentation by: Joa Jacks September 21st, 2006

  2. Objective • To better understand uses of compositional software in a high school music theory classroom. More specifically, using Sibelius and Finale, stating the effectiveness of each in a classroom setting.

  3. A few guiding questions… • Will my preference for one software over another skew my evidence? • What financial inhibitors might effect the use of such software in a classroom? • How can I keep it entertaining, but professional and educational? • Are these programs user-friendly for high school aged students?

  4. Taking the good with the bad… • Strengths? The ability to navigate with relative ease in one program due to heavy exposure. • Weaknesses? Easily frustrated! Difficulty in finding the commands to perform the task I wanted. Also, the myopic view of only one program.

  5. Assessment for mastery… • Exposure to many other different kinds of compositional software will aide me in becoming more familiar with different kinds, thus allowing a fluidity of instruction. • More experience = more knowledge!

  6. What did you learn, Dorothy? • Sibelius vs. Finale • Sibelius - Good for almost any age. Comes in varying levels of difficulty, depending on the needs of the user. Very thorough, but very expensive. • Finale – Focused for lower skill level composers. Allows quicker access to printed compositions. Finale 2005 is available to be downloaded for FREE!
