  2. What is a Word Wall? • Find a partner, stare at them so I know you have one. • The person with the longest hair is a one, the shorter hair is a 2. • 1s explain to 2’s what a word wall is.

  3. Word Wall • A word wall is a systematically organized collection of words displayed in large letters on a wall in the classroom. • ( Cunningham, 1995)

  4. Why Would you do a Word Wall? • 2s talk to 1s about why you might do a word wall in your classroom.

  5. Why? • Students need teachers who create an interest in words. • Word walls build vocabulary which is essential for secondary students. • In order to learn a word, students need to see, hear, and use terms in many contexts. • Vocabulary knowledge directly impacts reading comprehension.

  6. How? • Select five –seven words a week or unit that are essential for students to know. • Choose a method for displaying your words. • Change or add to the words each time you enter a new unit or topic.
