This textbook covers topics on DSP processors, focusing on the hardware interface aspect. It includes laboratory and lecture notes, worked examples, and a section on the use of Blackfin microcontrollers. The book is still in development but has web pages with chapters available.

Topics covered • Textbook in the making • ENCM415 2005 • Laboratory Notes • Lecture Notes • ENCM415 2004 • Laboratory Notes • Lecture Notes • ECE-ADI-Project • Worked examples
Text book in the making • Most courses look at the DSP processors only from the DSP side • Meaning they give you all the special algorithms for digital signal processing, and ask you to put these algorithms together to process signals. They don’t explain how to interface the chip at the hardware level – they just use it. • We have a number of courses at the U. of C. that use the Blackfin this way, or could use the Blackfin this way • E.g. ENCM491 – Real time systems “uses” Blackfin for “real-time systems” – no interfacing. • The Blackfin as a micro-controller is a “new” idea. It fits in with many new chips on the market which combine DSP and interfacing • As such, too new for a text book to have been developed I have three sets of web pages that contain the chapters of the text-book. It is just that I have not put the book down in a hard-copy version
Text book Part 1 • Current ENCM415 notes for 2005 http://www.enel.ucalgary.ca/People/Smith/2005webs/encm415_05/index.htm You need to look at “next week’s” laboratory notes. • The laboratory notes have more worked examples for the material covered in the lecture You need to look at “tomorrow’s” lecture notes. • Again, you will find additional examples showing you a different view of what you have seen today. • You can’t expect to understand 100% of the material from the lectures until you have tried it out in the laboratory.
Text book Part 2 • Current ENCM415 notes for 2004 http://www.enel.ucalgary.ca/People/Smith/2004webs/encm415_04/index.htm You need to look at “last year’s” laboratory notes. • The laboratory material is going to be very similar from year to year – it may be applied in a different way, but it is covering the same material • Look at last year’s quizzes with answer sheets. They are up on the web You need to look at “last year’s” lecture notes. • Again, you will find additional examples showing you a different view of what you have seen today.
Text book part 3 • Take a look at the ECE-ADI-Project web pages www.enel.ucalgary.ca/People/Smith/ECE-ADI-Project/Index/index.htm There you can find links to other universities using Blackfin www.enel.ucalgary.ca/People/Smith/ECE-ADI-Project/Index/otherschoolsFrame.htm and do-it-yourself on-line lessons on using the Blackfin assembly code for basic, audio and video projects www.enel.ucalgary.ca/People/Smith/ECE-ADI-Project/AudioProject/AudioBlackfin_CourseInfoFrame.htm www.enel.ucalgary.ca/People/Smith/ECE-ADI-Project/CourseInfo/VideoCourseInfoFrame.htm
Text book Part 4 • Finally you can ask questions in the class • Drop by to see the T.A.’s and L. A. (Marina, Jojo, Jean) in ICT520A • Chat to my graduate student Lily (ICT520A) – she T.A.’d ENCM415 last year • Or perhaps even talk to me (ICT536 or ICT520A)
