  1. Conflict! The essence of plot

  2. Why is conflict so important? • Conflict is a major part of the plot • PLOT – the events of the story (we’ll talk more about this later) • All good (well-written) characters have a goal, desire or objective. Conflict is what stands in the way of the characters achieving their objectives. • Every story has a protagonist and an antagonist.

  3. Protagonist • This is NOT necessarily the “good guy” • The protagonist is the main character or the character that the audience most easily sympathizes with

  4. Antagonist • This is NOT necessarily the “bad guy” • The antagonist is the person or force that opposes the protagonist.

  5. Conflict • When the protagonist and the antagonist oppose one another we have conflict. • There are two major types of conflict • Internal conflict • Conflict that a character has with him or herself • External conflict • Conflict that the character has with an outside person or force • What types of conflict have we seen so far in “The Most Dangerous Game?”

  6. Conflict • Internal conflict • Person vs. self • External conflict • Person vs. person • Person vs. nature • Person vs. society • Person vs. fate • Person vs. machine • Person vs. God

  7. Key TERMS • Plot • Protagonist • Antagonist • Conflict • Internal conflict • External conflict
