What is a Life Cycle? A life cycle is the changes and phases that an organism will go through in its lifetime. Today, we will look at the life cycle of two different organisms—the butterfly and the frog.
The Butterfly’s Life Cycle • A female butterfly lays her eggs on a plant. • When the egg hatches, the Larva emerges, which we commonly call a caterpillar.
Once the larva or caterpillar is full-grown, it enters the pupa stage where it turns into a Chrysalis. These usually hang from plants and can last for a few weeks or even months.
The Life Cycle of a Frog • The frog starts as an egg. The female frog lays many eggs at once. • Eventually, a tadpole emerges from the egg.
Over the next few weeks, the tadpole gets bigger. It also grows legs and then arms. Once the tadpole has arms, it is a Froglet. The froglet looks like an adult frog with a long tail. • As the froglet continues to grow, its tail becomes shorter until it is finally gone. The froglet is then an adult frog.
Discussion Time • What are some similarities between the life cycle of a butterfly and that of a frog? • In what ways are the life cycles of these two organisms different?
