Mole Haley Parent Anatomy and Physiology Period A
Facts • Formally known as Melanocyticnevus • Type of lesion that contains nevus cells • Most moles appear during the first two decades of a person’s life • Acquired moles (moles you are born with - genetics) are a form of benign neoplasm • Congenital moles are considered a malformation – people are at higher risk of melanoma.
Acquired through…. • Genetics: • People are often born with their moles. If a person has 50 or more, they are often more subjected to melanoma. • Sunlight • UV radiation causes premature damage to skin, causing mole markings (freckles, etc). Sunburns help to increase melanoma risk factors. • Those born with darker skin often have fewer moles, since darker skin reflects UV rays more efficiently.
Types of Moles • Skin tags: • Raised moles – flat moles • Benign moles: • Small and circular/oval • Compoud nevus • Slighty raised – brown to black – beauty marks are often compound nevus • Intradermal nevus • Located in dermis – raised – flesh colored. • Spitz nevus – popular in children – raised red bump
More types of Moles • Blue nevus: • Blue color very deep in the skin - spindle shaped and spread out in deep layers of dermis • Acquired nevus: • Any nevus not present at birth • Congenital nevus: • Small to large nevus present at birth
Mole related Problems • Dyplastic nevi and atypical mole syndrome: • Hereditary conditions causes a person to have many moles (100 +). Some are often larger than normal or atypical. This can lead to higher risk of melanoma • Melanoma – • When a UV proton strikes a chomophore, it causes damage to a melanocyte, which becomes a malignant tumor. • Melanoma is also genetic. Certain people run a higher risk than others. • Asymmetry, Border, Color, and Diameter.
Interesting facts on Facial Moles • Throughout history, those with facial moles often suffered attack, since they were not considered objects of beauty. They were considered hideaous growths of things such as witches. • In the 1950s, 60s and currently, facial moles were known as beauty marks when appearing on a woman’s face.
Mole removal • Moles can be removed, and are often removed when dealing with skin diseases like melanoma. • Scars or infections may occur after the mole is removed.
