  1. Turrill Elementary Lapeer Community Schools October 6, 2013 Room 127 Newsletter Mrs. Hribar’s First grade • Writing Workshop • Lastweek, we began our revision unit. We learned that writers go back and reread their writing. We learned that writers reread to make sure they did not leave out words and if they did they can insert them using a caret. Writers learn that when they need to add into their writing they can an extra piece of paper called a flap. This week, we will continue to work on revision and learn that writers cross out extra non-needed information. • Ideas to increase your child’s writing at school • Help your child to create a comic strip based on a family event that include dialogue. • Classroom Information • Classroom- We are continuing to work on listening to directions the first time given. Also, we are working on a class goal of keeping our noise level down by staying focused and not talking loudly during work time.. • Skinner Lake-Thank you to all the parents who attended our trip. Your participation helped to make our learning enjoybale. • Halloween Party-We will have a Halloween party onOct. 25th beginning at 2:30. We will start with a school wide parade. Please make sure that your child’s costume is school appropriate ( no bloody make up, masks, weapons) Look for more information to come regarding party events and activities. We will be doing pumpkin activities earlier in the morning. • Reading Workshop • We are continuing our work on practicing our reading skills. We are especially focusing on reading independently by staying focused on our just right book for30minutes. • During our mini-lessons I continue to stress the urgency and importance of staying focused on your book and getting started right away during reading workshop. • This week, we continued to talk about the strategies good readers use when they get stuck decoding(trying to figure out) a word such as using the picture, look at the beginning sound, stretching out the sounds, chunk it apart, skip it , read on, go back and reread it, and flip the vowel sound. See back for strategy cards that students have in their reading workshop bags to refer to daily. • Most importantly, as we work through using these strategies, it is important for your child to understand that the reading must make sense and not to continue reading without checking to see if the decoded word makes sense in the reading. Thank You! Thanks to everyone who came to conferences . It was wonderful to talk with all of you about the progress your child has made thus far. Remember, the school home connection is essential to helping your child be successful. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at ext. 4517 or email me at thribar@lapeerschools.org. Math In math, we continued to work on counting to 120 in different ways such as 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s. Through calendar, we are practicingaddition and subtraction. We are learning that addition and subtraction are related to each other and that they are called a fact family. Many of the students have the grasped the concept of turn around facts for addition. Ex: 6+3=9,3+6=9. However, we are still working to understand subtraction in the fact family begins with the greatest amount. Ex: 9-3=6,9-6=3. We are also working on understanding the terms compose (adding, ways to make) and decomposing (ways to break a number apart). Word Study We continued to review short vowel words and we began working with words with ending diagraphs such as –ck,-nk, and -ng. This week, we will continue to build words with these endings . We will also be introduced to the h brothers which are ch, sh, wh, and th. Ask your child to tell you the h brother story.
