4. THE THREE SPINNERS There was a poor widow who had the only daughter called Lizzie. They owned no field, not even a cow — all they had in the world was a spinning wheel, and so they earned for their living by spinning. Though Lizzie was pretty and well-behaved, she was idle. She didn’t want to spin at all. Her mother tried to force her to spin, but there were no any results. One day the mother's patience ran out. She lost her temper and slapped her daughter. This sent Lizzie into such hysterics that you could hear her for miles around. The queen happened to be riding by and, when she heard the heartrending cry, she stopped and entered the little cottage. When she saw Lizzie weeping so pitifully, she asked, 'What is the matter, dear child?' 'My mother has hit me!' the girl cried. 'Why did you hit this poor child?' asked the queen, turning to the widow.
