What in the World is a Wiki? Presented by Barry Wiginton Integration Specialist Technology in Motion--OTI Classroom Applications
What is a Wiki? • “Wiki Wiki” means "rapidly" in the Hawaiian language. • Simple Web page publishing.A Web site which allows users to add and edit content collectively. Example: Wikipedia • A collection of Web pages, each of which can be visited and edited by anyone. I would choose “Protected” for a Teacher’s Wiki. You will have to add your students as members but it is the most secure format.
Wikis in the Classroom • Classroom Uses: • A Teacher’s Web site • Student Collaboration on a writing or research project • Forum for gathering information from a large group
Who Will Edit the Wiki? • Single:one person will edit the whole wiki • Example: Teacher creates a Web site to inform parents and students. • Group:a community of peers will edit the wiki • Example: A class of students work on a class project. • Mass:a group of people who may or may not know one another will edit the wiki • Example: Learning community of educators or studentsworking collaboratively with students from another school.
Creating a Teacher’s Wiki • In the following activity, you will create a teacher’s Web site for the purpose of: • Informing parents and students of assignments and important events. • Communicating your contact information, teaching philosophy, expectations, etc. • Instructing students both during class and extended class work. • Hosting instructional Web sites, interactive tools, other wikis, etc.
Teacher Wiki– Getting Started • Choose from many free wiki providers: • http://del.icio.us/bwiginton/wiki • add + “sites” to limit to 3 sites • For this activity, choose Wikispaces. • Register for Your free wiki and record log in information on reminder sheet.
I skip this section once I am familiar with how Wikispaces work.
Edit this Page No more difficult than email. Since this is your Homepage, it would be a good idea to put a picture of yourself and possibly upload a podcast or Photo Story to introduce yourself to parents and students.
Edit this Page Use same process to add images, files, or podcasts.
Working with Images • It is best to set resolution of images for web to …… 428 X 320 • Use Audacity to record your Podcast.

They digitally record their progress and add the images to their wiki for you to share. • Nature Guide- The teacher sets up a template and the students add information about plants and animals they find in their environmental center. Notice the section on Internet safety! • Exploring Density- Check out the hot air balloon.
Wikis Promote Good Writing • Cinderella’s Story- Students retell the story of Cinderella from the perspective of various characters in the story. • Hero’s- Students share their idea of what is a hero and write about heroes in their lives. • Environment- Students explore the impact man is having on the environment. • Violence- Students take lessons from Shakespeare and apply them to their lives.
