Design Theory Rhythm, Balance, Proportion, Emphasis and Harmony
Rhytm Rhythm is repetition. By repeating certain elements a sense of movement can occur.
Balance Elements are placed on to give a sense of steadiness. Formal balance is achieved when a line is drawn through the center of the design to create two halves that are symmetrical. Informal balance is when the balance of the objects may look different, but have equal weight to the eye. Radial balance has everything moving outwards from a center point. Balance can also be achieved through the use of colour
Proportion Objects in design must use proportion to create a focal point and to be pleasing to the eye
Emphasis Emphasis is used to create a focal point on a singular object in a scene.
Emphasis by Contrast Emphasis can be created by contrasting size, colour, shape or flow)
Emphasis by Isolation Emphasis by Isolation removes a single object from a group
Emphasis by Placement An object placed in the center will often be perceived as a focal point. If all eyes in the painting look at one object, or if an object is placed at the center of the lines of perspective, that object will be perceived as the focus of the work.
Assignment Create an image which uses the principles discussed to make a your focal point a small object appear large, or a large object appear small.
