  3. Analysis Analysis; OZYMADIAS Massive statue with no body, just legs I met a traveler from an antique land, Who said:- “Two vast and trunkless legs of stone Stand in the desert.. Near them, on the sand, Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown, And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command, Tell that its sculptor well those passions read Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things, The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed: And on the pedestal these words appear: "My name is Ozymandias, king of kings: Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!" Nothing beside remains. Round the decay Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare The lone and level sands stretch far away” Characteristics show he was a harsh leader The expressions were chiseled into the statue The features given to the statue show the character of Ozymandias. “heart that fed” is the heart of the king which “fed” off of the misery and misfortune of others around him IRONY Hopeless, miserable, unhappy

  4. 3 Important Quotes 1 2 Important Quotes “whose frown, /And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command” - show characteristic of Ramses- harsh- angry-like “The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed” - slavery - he was in charge of everything=> including food - Image of power “My name is Ozymandias, king of kings: / Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!” - conceited his role as a King/leader - more imagery of power - character=> put others down, boastful

  5. 4 5 6 Important Quotes Continued “Nothing beside remains. Round the decay / Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare/ The lone and level sands stretch far away” • - IRONY • - ”Look on my works”=> statue alone in desert • - nothing to show great works • - nothing to show for pedestal • - proud boast has been disapproved • Ozymandias’ works have crumbled and disappeared, his civilization is gone, all has • been turned to dust by the impersonal, indiscriminate, destructive power of history “tell that its sculptor well those passions read” - the sculptor skillfully interpreted the king's feelings “Nothing beside remains” - Pharaoh's boasts are now as empty as the empty and boundless desert surrounding the decaying statue.

  6. Literary Devices Literary Devices “Ozymandias” is a sonnet - a poem with 14 lines - unusual sonnet for this era (1977) - it does not fit a conventional Petrarchan pattern (about love) Ozymandias, symbolizes political tyranny - suggests that tyranny is temporary - unjust political leader cannot have hope to have lasting power or real influence - being told about the statue of Ramses from someone who heard about it from a traveler undermines Ramses power over the passage of time Broken monument also represents the decay of civilization, culture and insignificance of human beings through passage of time.

  7. Setting Setting . DESERT • Has two settings • - Place where narrator and traveler meets • Inside the traveler’s tale about the statue • The statue is at the site of the ancient Egyptian capital, Thebes . . STATUE On the western side of the river was a vast cemetery, or city of the dead, where statues, temples, and tombs memorialized the pharaohs . On the eastern side of the river was the city proper THEBES
