Protagonist vs. Antagonist • Protagonist – main character • Antagonist – in direct conflict with the main character
Characterization • Characterization – process authors use to make memorable characters • Direct vs. Indirect • Direct – an author tells reader what a character is like • Indirect • Writer reveals a character’s personality through his appearance, words, actions, and effects on others • Other characters might say what they think of the character • Reader must draw his own conclusions
Motivation • Reason that explains (or partially explains) a character’s thoughts, feelings, actions, or speech • Authors try to make motivations clear so that characters are believable • Can be motivated by needs: food, shelter, etc. • Can be motivated by feelings: love, fear, pride, etc.
