  1. ArgumentEssay Feedback Nuggets of Wisdom from AFri

  2. Recommendation #1 • Mention the context in the introductory paragraph. Talk about nature, mercy, or compassion! • Many of you failed to mention the title and author of the book in the intro paragraph. • Finally, books titles are underlined—italicized if typed. • In other words, DON’T USE “” for book titles.

  3. Recommendation #2 • Focus on the argument of the essay—eachTS needs to be a reason your thesis is correct! • Consider the following prompts: • Just Mercy: “Write an essay that argues your position on the value of mercy and compassion in our world today.” • Sample TS: Mercy is valuable because it takes into account a person’s background and experiences.

  4. Recommendation #2, Con’d • Quiet: “Argue to what extent our inborn personality traits determine our life paths.” • Sample TS: Our personality traits affect the occupations we choose in life. • The Forest Unseen: “Argue your position on the value of self-knowledge through the observation of nature.” • Sample TS: Observation of nature allows individuals to understand their role in life.

  5. Recommendation #3 • Don’t start the first sentence of the essay with an example—give a reason first! • This is a persuasive paper—let the argument come first. • Also, your outlining needs help—every TS should be a reason, and the CDs are supporting examples.

  6. Overall • Overall, an understanding of prompt, coupled with strong organization, will improve your scores! Writing ROCKS!
