  4. The EC plays an “enzymatic” role Ligase? catalyzes the reaction which joins two molecules. Examples include peptide synthetase, aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase, DNA ligase and RNA ligase. by joining groups in transnational efforts providing activation energy Transferase? catalyzes transfers of groups (acetyl, methyl, phosphate, etc.). Common names include acetyltransferase, methylase, protein kinase and polymerase. The first three subclasses play major roles in the regulation of cellular processes. Life sciences: genomics and biotechnology for health (€ 2,255 m) • Advanced genomics & its application for health • Fundamental knowledge and basic tools for functional genomics in all organisms • Application of knowledge and technologies in the field of genomics and biotechnology for health • Combating major diseases • Application-oriented approaches to medical genomics knowledge and technologies • Combating cancer • Confronting the major communicable diseases linked to poverty (AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria)

Food Quality and Safety (€ 685 m) • Epidemiology of food-related diseases and allergies • Impact of food on health • Traceability processes along the production chain • Methods of analysis, detection and control • Safer and environmentally friendly production • methods and technologies, and healthier food stuffs • Impact of animal feed on human health • Environmental health risks

Technology Platforms Central Concept : a framework to unite all interested parties in a particular sector or area of strategic importance or potential contribution to knowledge-based growthMain features: a common long-term “vision” for the technology concerned mobilisation of a critical mass of public and private research and innovation efforts definition of a Strategic Research Agenda and roadmap to realise the common vision A new instrument is proposed for FP7 to support ambitious, large-scale research projects through large public-private partnerships: “Joint European Technology Initiative”

Technology PlatformPlant Genomics and Biotechnology • “Plants for the future” vision paper prepared by representatives of research, biotechnology and food industry, farmers, consumers and other stakeholders • Objectives • Produce better quality, healthy, affordable and diverse food • Bring about agricultural and environmental sustainability, including biomaterials, bio-energy and renewable resources • Enhance the competitiveness of European agriculture, food, biotechnology and other related industries • Strategic research agenda to be developed by 4 working groups: • Basic plant genomics research • Sustainable agriculture • Plants for food and non-food products • Horizontal issues group (training, consumer issues, regulatory issues, etc.) Secretariat jointly run by European Plant Science Organisation (EPSO) and EuropaBio

Technology Platform Industrial (white) Biotechnology • Industrial (“white”) biotechnology is a sub-platform of the sustainable Chemistry Technology Platform (CTP) launched by European Chemical Industry Council (CEFIC) and EuropaBio on 6 July 2004 • Vision Paper prepared by research, chemical and biotechnology industry, consumers, environmental groups and regulators • A joint advisory council together with other pillars of CTP • An industrial steering group and working groups will be set up early 2005 to develop a strategic research agenda by mid 2005

International co-operation inLife Sciences and Biotechnology Objectives • To reinforce the S&T base for European research and competitiveness • To help resolving global problems including: food safety, health and major transmissible diseases • To support the EU Development Aid and External policies • To promote co-operation with countries having established S&T co-operation agreements with the EU
