Xenos Christian Fellowship “Freedom Through the Love of Christ” Come on in, have a seat… Mark 6 With special guest teacher Dr. Joel “HgsDctr” Hughes feat. Jake Lagotte and more!
Mark 6: Revolutionary Tale • There’s always been revolutions • We have revolutions because leadership is broken
Mark 6: Revolutionary Tale • The “Big Debrief” is Interrupted • The Leader’s Unexpected Response • The Logistical Nightmare • The Unnecessary Miracle • The Bread of Life
The “Big Debrief…” • “Then the apostles gathered around Jesus and told him everything they had done and taught. He said to them, “Come with me privately to an isolated place and rest a while” (for many were coming and going, and there was no time to eat). So they went away by themselves in a boat to some remote place.” • - Mark 6:30-32
…is interrupted. • “But many saw them leaving and recognized them, and they hurried on foot from all the towns and arrived there ahead of them.” • - Mark 6:33
King? • “Now when the people saw the miraculous sign that Jesus performed, they began to say to one another, “This is certainly the Prophetwho is to come into the world.” Then Jesus, because he knew they were going to come and seize him by force to make him king, withdrew again up the mountainside alone.” • - John 6:14-15
Sheep need shepherds. • “As Jesus came ashore he saw the large crowd and he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he taught them many things.” • - Mark 6:34
Shepherd means military/political leader. • “Then Moses spoke to the Lord: ‘Let the Lord, the God of the spirits of all humankind, appoint a man over the community, who will go out before them, and who will come in before them, and who will lead them out, and who will bring them in, so that the community of the Lord may not be like sheep that have no shepherd.’” • - Numbers 27:15-17
Israel had bad shepherds (i.e., leaders) “The word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel; prophesy, and say to them –Should not shepherds feed the flock? You eat the fat, you clothe yourselves with the wool, you slaughter the choice animals, but you do not feed the sheep! You have not strengthened the weak, healed the sick, bandaged the injured, brought back the strays, or sought the lost, but with force and harshness you have ruled over them. They were scattered because they had no shepherd, and they became food for every wild beast.” - Ezekiel 34
So God will have to do it himself… • “‘For this is what the sovereign Lord says: Look, I myself will search for my sheep and seek them out. … I will rescue them... I myself will feed my sheepI will seek the lost and bring back the strays; I will bandage the injured and strengthen the sick, I will set one shepherd over them, and he will feed them – namely, my servant David. He will feed them and will be their shepherd. I, the Lord, will be their God, and my servant David will be prince among them; I, the Lord, have spoken!’.” • - Ezekiel 34
Who is God talking about? • Ezekiel was written when David had been dead for centuries…who is this “David” that God is saying will be Israel’s shepherd?
Flashback! • Jesus sends out the 12 Apostles • Mark 6:7-12 • Death of John the Baptist—flashback! • Mark 6:14-29 • The “big debrief” is interrupted by revolutionaries • Mark 6:30-44
Jesus is the servant who rules and the ruler who serves • “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” • - Mark 10:45
is what? • Psalm 23: The Lord is my what? • King David was what when God sent Samuel to fetch him? • To whom did the armies of Heaven appear to announce “Glory to God and peace on earth among men?” • In John 10 Jesus is the good what?
The Good Shepherd • “The one who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. The doorkeeper opens the door for him, and the sheep hear his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought all his own sheep out, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they recognize his voice.” • John 10:2-4 • “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” • - John 10:11
What Revolution? • When it was already late, his disciples came to him and said, “This is an isolated place and it is already very late. Send them away so that they can go into the surrounding countryside and villages and buy something for themselves to eat.” But he answered them, “You give them something to eat.” And they said, “Should we go and buy bread for two hundred silver coins and give it to them to eat?” He said to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.” When they found out, they said, “Five – and two fish.” • - Mark 6:35-38
What Revolution? • Then he directed them all to sit down in groups on the green grass. So they reclined in groups of hundreds and fifties. He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. He gave them to his disciples to serve the people, and he divided the two fish among them all. They all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up the broken pieces and fish that were left over, twelve baskets full. Now there were five thousand men who ate the bread. • - Mark 6:39-44
Partnership • Jesus AND apostles together • Apostles have been training for this
Reasonable ministers • When it was already late, his disciples came to him and said, “This is an isolated place and it is already very late. Send them away so that they can go into the surrounding countryside and villages and buy something for themselves to eat.”But he answered them, “You give them something to eat.” And they said, “Should we go and buy bread for two hundred silver coins and give it to them to eat?” He said to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.” When they found out, they said, “Five – and two fish.” • - Mark 6:35-38
The Logistical Nightmare • When it was already late, his disciples came to him and said, “This is an isolated place and it is already very late.
Send them away so that they can go into the surrounding countryside and villages and buy something for themselves to eat.” But he answered them, “You give them something to eat.”And they said, “Should we go and buy bread for two hundred silver coins and give it to them to eat?”He said to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.” When they found out, they said, “Five – and two fish.” • - Mark 6:35-38
Why does Jesus create crisis? • Inadequacy of disciples • Adequacy of Jesus
Why does Jesus create crisis? • “‘But he said to me, “My grace is enough for you, for my power is made perfectin weakness.” So then, I will boast most gladly about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may reside in me. Therefore I am content with weaknesses, with insults, with troubles, with persecutions and difficulties for the sake of Christ, for whenever I am weak, then I am strong.” • - 2 Corinthians 12:9-10
The Unnecessary Miracle • No one is dying • Not a big spectacle
The bread of life • And he took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up towards heaven, He blessed the food and broke the loaves and He kept giving them to the disciples to set before them. • - Mark 6:41
The bread of life • While they were eating, he took bread, and after giving thanks he broke it, gave it to them, and said, “Take it. This is my body.” • - Mark 14:22
The bread of life • When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him there, along with the criminals-one on his right, the other on his left. Jesus said, “Father forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” • - Luke 23:33-34
