2. OUR GOAL Every Year 12 student will leave with a qualification that leads to a viable post school option: • Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) AND • OP 1-15 • Vocational Education and Training Certificate (Certificate 1, 2 or 3)

3. Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) • Queensland’s senior schooling qualification • Internationally recognised • Awarded when you meet the set requirements • Shows employers and training providers that you have worked consistently and to a high standard over two years • May be required to enrol in further education and training

4. How do I get a QCE? To achieve a QCE each student must: • Achieve 20 credits from their learning • These are achieved through passing a semester of a school based subject or through nationally recognised certificate courses. • Pass at least 1 semester of English and Maths • Study at least 3 subjects for a minimum of 4 semesters

5. Does Joe get a QCE? • Joe Bloggs • Has he achieved 20 credits overall? • Has Joe passed English and Maths in at least 1 semester? • Has he achieved credits in three subjects, which he has studied over 4 semesters? • Does he get a QCE?

6. Does Jane get a QCE? • Jane Dowe • Has she achieved 20 credits overall? • Has Jane passed English and Maths in at least 1 semester? • Has she achieved credits in three subjects, which she has studied over 4 semesters? • Does she get a QCE?

Senior Pathways OP Pathway OP Ineligible Pathway Students on a Non OP pathway: Will select any 6 of the courses on offer at Cavendish Rd SHS Engage in Vocational Education and Training Certificates (Cert I, II, III) Intend to study at TAFE (as a pathway to University) or go straight into the workforce after high school Students on an OP Pathway: • Will study 5 or more OP eligible subjects – 1 must be English and 1 must be Maths • Sit for the Queensland Core Skills (QCS) Test • Intend to go to University after high school

8. Expectations for Study OP Pathway • This is an academic course of study • Students will need to complete approx. 3 hours of study per night • Students should be aiming to get an OP of 1-15 • Students should be aiming to achieve As and Bs in their subjects OP Ineligible Pathway • This is a course of study often with an industry or practical focus • Students will need to apply themselves to all assessment items and class demands • Students should be aiming to achieve competencies and experience in a range of learning opportunities and achieve As, Bs and Cs in all subjects

9. Senior Statement A transcript of your learning Statement shows subjects/courses you studied and results you achieved in Years 11 and 12 Awarded to all students who complete Year 12 (and attend up to the last day of Yr 12)

11. QCS Test -What is it? Achievement Test – not an intelligence or aptitude test Assesses achievement in 49 common curriculum elements that are found in the QLD Senior curriculum sketching, explaining, analysing, expounding, graphing, … (You study these in your subjects) A common statewide SCALING test for Queensland Year 12 students Consists of 4 papers – Short Response, Writing Task, Multiple Choice I and Multiple Choice II Conducted over 2 days in Year 12

Subject Selection for 2018 To prepare for subject selection evening – 14th August you need to: • Think about the subjects you will choose – ones you enjoy, ones that match your ability and ones that match your career path • Understand the types of subjects on offer: Authority Subjects (OP Subjects), Authority-Registered Subjects (SAS) or VET Certificates • Choose those that you meet the prerequisite requirements for (prerequisites will be outlined in your subject selection booklets

Subject Selection for 2018 Authority Subjects • Contribute to the calculation of OPs and Tertiary Selection Ranks • Academic subjects – more theory based • Should be achieving A and Bs in your current Year 10 subjects Authority-Registered Subjects • Are not included in the calculation of OPs • Are included in the calculation of Tertiary Selection Ranks • These subjects emphasise practical skills and knowledge relevant to specific industries eg. Information Communication & Technology

Subject Selection for 2018 VET (Vocational Education & Training) Certificates • Certificates can be studied on campus at Cav Road SHS (by our trained staff or an external registered training provider (RTO) • Qualifications gained are recognised nationally • Studies focus on work skills • For students who want to enter the workforce or move on to further TAFE or academic studies

Subject Selection Evening - Monday 14th August 2017 What you should do … • Attend the evening with your parents • Talk to the Heads of Department/teachers about the subjects you are interested in studying in Year 11 • Ask plenty of questions so you are well informed when you make your subject choices • For students who want to enter the workforce or move on to further TAFE or academic studies On the night, you will receive: • Your subject selection booklet • Your subject selection form Work with your parents at home to select your subjects and fill in the form

Subject Selection Evening - Monday 14th August 2017 What if I don’t attend the evening? … • You will not receive your subject selection book or subject selection form • You will collect it the next day at school • Your subject selection form will be a different colour to the one students received at the subject selection evening • When you attend your subject selection interview, you may not be guaranteed a place in the subjects you chose (your interviewer will know by the colour of the form whether you attended the subject selection evening or not) What should I do? – make plans with your family now to be able to attend the subject selection evening
