Research question • Would lava tubes be a suitable living space for humans? • Our research question is important because, If the lava tubes are suitable for humanity, then there is a possibility of human life on Mars. • Our science question is interesting because with lava tubes being a possible space for humans, it changes our minds on Mars and how we can possibly live on Mars.
BackgroundInformation How are lava tubes made? Are there any other ways lava tubes can be made?
Background information • Lava tubes are formed when low viscosity lava flow continues to develop a hard crust causing it to form a roof above the lava stream. There are two ways in forming these lava tubes: Crusting over lava flows or when pahoehoe flows under the ground. • Lava leaves point of eruption on channels or in a fan like channel • Channels • When erupting in channels the channels can get deep enough to crust over, forming an insulating tube that keeps the lava molten and serves as a conduit for the flowing lava • Fan like channel • Lava flows-- continues to flow its way until it begins to block its source

Flow map: formation of lava tubes Lava erupts from craters The lava continues to flow into the ground As the lava Continues to Flow, it also Starts to harden On the ground Once the lava completely Hardens, it gets really Deep and starts to Form an Insulating Lava tube.
Hypothesis • If the lava tubes are a good place for humans to live, then looking at the pictures of the lava tubes, it concludes that lava tubes maybe located near the equator of mars, because of the increase in temperature.

Methods continued… • Website list: http://themis.asu.edu/zoom-20041115a Data collection steps on site: • Go to the http://themis.asu.edu/zoom-20041115a website • Go on the “image gallery” • Click on “Themis image by topic” • Then click on the “volcanic” category then select an image below the few labeled pictures. There, you will find an image with the latitude and longitude and a miscellaneous observation.
Look for where lava tubes are located. • Check if they are located near the surface or underground. • If it’s on the surface check if it is open or closed. • If it’s underground check if it is the right temperature. • If it’s on the surface and closed, check if it’s closer to the poles or equator. Data Charts and information including lava tubes are mars.
Discussion Mars Is Money
Data Chart This data is important because the location of the lava tubes affects whether the area is suitable for life. These areas could already contain life but when humans go there it could be an important area for humans to take refuge when they first land on Mars for an expedition. This set of data shows the location of some lava tubes we found. By using the latitude and longitude we can check if the area that specific coordinate is in has good shelter for a future Mars expedition.
MOLA-Map Again? This MOLA map with a scatter plot shows the coordinates of the vast amounts of lava tubes we observed. As we can see by this data in the red area there are many lava tubes in this area that may or not be suitable for survival for human life. By using this data an expedition could possibly locate an area to take refuge in while on Mars.
