  1. Shopping for a Tractor Edgar Ag Mech Class MrReinders

  2. Common Rule of Thumb • If it does have good sheet metal, but doesn’t run is worth more than an incomplete running tractor.

  3. Common vs. Uncommon • Common Tractors are easier to find parts for: • Farmall H • John Deere A and B • Ford N Series • Uncommon tractors can be worth more money because they are rare.

  4. What will you use it for? • Restoration. • Work. If you plan to cultivate crops, then a Ford N series is not a good tractor. • If you plan to mow ditches, then a John Deere A is not a good tractor.

  5. Things to Consider when shopping for a tractor. • Where did the tractor originate from? • It can tell you how the tractor was ages and how it was used.

  6. Things to consider… • Check to see if the hose between the carburetor and the air cleaner is missing. Why???

  7. Things to consider… • Know the model before you buy. Are all the parts original? • Are the rims in good condition?

  8. Evaluating a tractor • Cooling System Inspection. What do you not want to see in the radiator? • Check the oil? What color do you not want it to be?? • Engine? Does it start easily or at all. If it does not start, your price should start at junk value.

  9. Evaluation continued • Run the engine at least ½ hour. • Exhaust: Check for smoke. What color is bad? • Engine noise. Try to differentiate between a tick or a thump. Each sound has different meaning. • Check for Oil Leaks after running. • Electrical System: Is the battery recharging. • Hydraulic System: Do rams work? Is there chattering.

  10. Negotiating a Price • Become knowledgeable about the market. • Check Craigslist/Ebay/Newspapers. • The owner will tell you it ran the last time they used it, but if it is sitting a long time there may be new problems. • How much are you willing to spend on the project? • ASSUME THE WORST GOING INTO A PROJECT!
