Learning and Teaching – the national perspective National quality indicators used in school inspections by Education Scotland • Pupils are motivated and eager participants in their learning. • Teachers create a stimulating learning climate using skilful and well- paced learning and teaching approaches. • Teachers develop learners’ abilities to be curious and creative and think critically. • Our teaching fully involves learners and encourages them to express views and ask questions.
Learning and Teaching – the national perspective A focus on learning which promotes young people’s sense of purpose and motivation to learn. Characteristics of this learning include: • learning independently • taking responsibility for learning • active learning and collaborative learning • applying learning and skills development. • Staff take ownership of professional learning, including reflection on practice as an individual and with others • Staff are aware of the impact of their professional learning on their work and the experiences of learners.
Learning and Teaching – the local perspective Co-operative learning – active and collaborative • Approximately 900 teachers have taken part in a 4 day co-operative learning academy. • We have an additional 180 co-operative “masters” who have taken part in the basic academy • They lead training in their own schools and introductory training across Edinburgh. • All Languages professional learning and resource development is based on active and collaborative approaches.
