  15. Computer Science An introduction to the art

  16. Computer Science • It is an art form • Allows infinite numbers of combinations of words, images and ideas. • Used to entertain and inform the masses. • Goes beyond the infamous binary code Can you think of a problem a computer scientist could solve?

  17. Computer Scientists • Computer scientists look at individual pieces not just the big picture. • Computer simulation and automated performance was born because of the individual pieces • Computer scientists are not just programmers

  18. Q: What other jobs could benefit from the help of computer science? Q: Are there any jobs that you can think of where understanding computers would not be useful? Do you think there will be more or fewer of those in 5 years?

  19. Computer Science Your responsibility in a techy world

  20. What’s your responsibility? Find your balance. Here’s three ways to find balance between technology and human-power: Technology vs. Physical Movement Technology vs. Environment Technology vs. Philanthropy

  21. Technology vs. Physical Activity • Enjoy technology but live a little. Go play outside whenever you can. • When using technology, Take stretch breaks every half an hour • Follow the 20/20/20 rule: • “Every 20 minutes look at least 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.” http://i.telegraph.co.uk/multimedia/archive/01249/computers_school_1249813c.jpg http://www.medicorium.com/images/Haber%20Resim/kid-playground-425ds072809.jpg

  22. Technology vs. Environment • Be careful with electricity • Turn the lights off when leaving a room • Shut down and unplug your computer when you’re done using it • Recycle unwanted paper Q: What other electricity do you use that you could try to save? Q: Is there anything else you could recycle to help offset paper use?

  23. Technology vs. Philanthropy • Get into the habit of “paying it forward” • Help someone else having trouble with computers • Explain what you learn to others. Help them so you can help yourself. Q: How would you help the world if you were a computer scientist? Q: Who is the first person that you are going to teach this to once you learn it? https://philanthropy.com/img/photos/biz/photo_41217_carousel.jpg

  24. Activity Introduction to Hour of Code and learning how a computer thinks

  25. Learning Binary Coding Refer to your handouts
