  1. Seminar on Mathematica6 Welcome to IT’s seminar on Mathematica Sam Gordji, ccsam@olemiss.edu Jason Hale,jghale@olemiss.edu Weir 107

  2. General Information • Questions will be answered during the seminar • What is new in Mathematica 6: • Mathematica does mathematical operations • Its competitors are MathWorks, Maple, and others • University decided on getting Mathematica after looking into other similar packages

  3. General Information • Email contact • Email your questions to mathadm@olemiss.edu • To download Mathematica 6 Please visit: http://www.mcsr.olemiss.edu/appssubpage.php?pagename=mathematica.inc • Please fill out the performance report and leave your email address so we may contact you for follow up questions

  4. General Information • This seminar covers Mathematica 6 for Ole Miss given the limitations placed on the presenter of this seminar • All the work in Mathematica is performed in a Notebook

  5. General Information • The content of the other seminars may be viewed at http://www.mcsr.olemiss.edu/mathematica/fall_sem • The content of this seminar may be downloaded from: http://www.mcsr.olemiss.edu/appssubpage.php?pagename=mathcamp.inc

  6. General Information • Some of Mathematica’s Webpages: http://library.wolfram.com/infocenter/BySubject/Mathematica/ApplicationPackages/ http://www.wolfram.com/services/ http://www.wolfram.com/siteinfo/ • The last one contains UM site Information and help users to find various information such as services available to UM users, etc.

  7. Introduction • Mathematica’s main function is to perform Mathematical operations • This seminar is based on how Mathematica is being used at UM

  8. Mathematica’s Help browser • Let’s spend a few minutes and check the Startup Palette on What’s New in Mathematica 6 • Viewing of S10 and modified S10

  9. A practical problem • The following equation is the solution for the Richard’s equation and yields the amount of time needed for the saturated surface content to reach the residual moisture at the surface (Z=0) 2.18*((t/pi)^.5)*Exp[-t/4.] =.216 • Please note that all the parameters are substituted in the above equation.

  10. Y-axis is the moisture content and the x-axis rep. depth. Graphs shows how evaporation takes place
