The Challenges of Training in the 90’s Presented by: Antoinette Tiangco
Objectives • To present an informative view of training in the 90’s. • That you learn a great deal from the presentation. • The presentation can be useful to any future presentations you may be making.
Presentation Agenda • Introduction of Topic • Subjects include: • Adapting to Change • Changing the Training Paradigm • The Three Areas of a Computer Training Paradigm • Conclusion • Question Period
Introduction • The computer trainer is forever a learner. • Enormous changes in technology and business since the first PC’s were introduced. • Advancement in technology does not allow us to use the same training models. • It is human nature to be attached to the old and the familiar. • The new and different takes a bit of getting used to.
Adapting to Change • Computer trainers have to adapt to the constant changes. • Speed of changes • Planning, implementing and evaluating our training no longer takes months. • Software and hardware is out of date in months. • Societal changes require new training methods. • “We need to change, we need to adapt and we need to do it yesterday.”
Changing the Training Paradigm • Paradigm-something that serves as an example or model of how things should be done. • The existing paradigm of computer training has fast become out of date. • Computer trainers now have to be able to adapt, change and become more responsive to the environment around them.
Computer Training Paradigm The Learning Model-the model we use to understand how people learn. The Training Model-the model we use to determine and direct the trainer’s function. The Training Delivery Model-The model we use to determine how the training is ultimately delivered.
The Learning Model HOW PEOPLE LEARN A) OLD-Learning key strokes and procedures. NEW-Learning concepts B)OLD-Training from software NEW-Training from the learners’ needs
The Learning Model continued C) OLD-Learning is linear NEW-Learning is nonlinear
The Training Model TO DIRECT AND DETERMINE THE TRAINER’S FUNCTION A) OLD-The trainer provides information NEW-The trainer facilitates and coaches B) OLD-The Trainer directs training NEW-Learners help direct training
The Training Model Cont.. C) OLD-Synchronous classroom training NEW-Adaptive classroom training D) OLD-”Techie” trainers NEW- Trainers that seem like real people
The Training Delivery Model HOW THE TRAINING IS ULTIMATELY DELIVERED A) OLD- Instructor-led training NEW- ”Multimedia” training B)OLD- Training as scheduled NEW-Training when you need it
The Training Delivery Model Cont. C) OLD-Training as an event NEW- Learning is a process
Conclusion • The computer trainer is forever a learner • Great communication skills as well as high-tech knowledge skills. • Adapting to the learning changes will not mean a matter of choice but a matter of survival. • People will demand new, easier and innovative ways of learning and computer trainers must respond.
