The Nile River • Biggest river in the world • Flows north • Distance is 4,145 miles • River starts at the mountains of central Africa and flows to the Mediterranean Sea • Final 600 Miles is in Egypt • Before river reaches the sea, there is a delta. • Delta fan shaped area of fertile land • Most ancient Egyptians lived in the area of the delta.
The Nile River • The Nile plays an important role in ancient Egypt • Not only a major resource, but acted as a buffer zone • The desert and the river kept out invaders • Cataracts (waterfalls) also aided in keeping out invaders
The Nile River • When the Nile would flood (July) the water would leave the soil very rich which lead to the growing of crops • The farmers would plant fields when soil was still wet • Used their own irrigation system • In dry season they created basins-bowl shaped holes- • A machine (shadoof) would lift water from the Nile and fill in the basins. • Crops: flax, wheat, barley, and grapes
