This is a Montana \Private Applicator License • Also Known as a Farm Applicator Certification • This is not a commercial / government / or non-commercial license
Where? • Private Applicator License: Only on land that you own, rent, or lease. • Not for contract or hire • Not while working as a government or tribal employee
Allows you to apply restricted use pesticides (RuP’s) • Restricted Use • Significant adverse effects upon human and/or animal health or significant environmental considerations. • Tordon 22K, Warrior 1E, Aluminum phosphide, Lorsban, Zinc phosphide, Guthion • General Use • Forefront, Milestone, 2,4-D, Banvel, Curtail, Roundup
Who is covered under your private applicator license. • They may purchase, apply, or handle restricted use pesticides under your license. • Immediate family members (spouse, children) • Employees (Worker Protection Safety Training Mandatory) • Request that the Montana Department of Ag issue you 2 permits (a duplicate) • REMEMBER: You are responsible for their safety and actions?
Some things you can do with this license • You can • Apply RuPs to land that you own, rent, or lease • Apply GuPs to land of your immediate neighbor as long as it is not done commercially
Some things you cannot do with this license • Apply RuPs commercially • Apply RuPs on land of your immediate neighbor • Give your license to non-family members or non-employees to purchase RuPs • Sell or give away pesticides
How to become certified • Take an open book exam at the extension office • Pass with a 70% • Attend an approved private applicator initial certification event (6 hours of training) and take an ungraded quiz • Complete the application • Sign it! • Include proper fees • Mail it to the Montana Dept. of Agriculture

What if you’re applying restricted use pesticides to tribal land? • The Montana private applicator license can’t be used for pesticide applications on tribal land. • Tribal applicators will need to fill out the EPA tribal application request form. • No fee. • http://www2.epa.gov/pesticide-applicator-certification-indian-country • Private applicator will need send request form with a copy of their Montana Private Applicator License (both sides) to EPA: US EPA, Region 8 Attn: Region 8 Certification 1595 Wynkoop St, 8P-P3T Denver, CO 80202
Payments are Prorated Based on When you are Certified within the Cycle • Based on a 5 year cycle • Prorated Amounts • 1st year - $50 • 2nd year – $40 • 3rd year - $30 • 4th year - $20 • 5th year - $10
Example: Certified In Region 2 • Certification Period January 1st 2010 – December 31st 2014 • Pro-rating of fees: If you are initially certified at any time within 2014 then fee is only 10 dollars. On January 1st, 2015 the region 2 applicator will need to pay another $50 for the next 5 year cycle.
Where does the money go? • 1993 legislature • $50 to renew • $15 (30%) to MT Dept of Ag for administration • $20 (40%) to MSU Extension to support training • 15 to MSU Extension counties • 5 to MSU Administration • $15 (30%) to fund the pesticide collection program
How to stay certified • Need to obtain 6 private applicator recertification credits prior to your regions deadline. • This is waived if you are certified in the last year of the cycle • Applicators will be pro-rated 3 private applicator recertification credits if they become certified after the middle of their certification cycle. • Region 4: After July 1st of 2014

Can you re-qualify for certification in any other ways? • Online Credits • Available online at www.pesticides.montana.edu by selecting ‘Private’ and ‘Online Credits’. • You can accumulate 2 recertification credits by taking the online quizzes (10 questions each) • Follow all instructions (Send payment to MSU) • Closed Book Exam • You may take the closed book exam in the last year of the cycle to qualify for recertification (pass with >70%)
View Education Credits Online • Navigate to https://app.mt.gov/pest/index • Click on ‘View Education Credits’ • Enter your license number • Click continue
What if you don’t re-qualify in time? • Must take a closed book Montana Private Applicator Certification Exam during the recertification year (6th year), and answer 70% of the questions correctly • Or attend a 6 h initial certification course and take the ungraded quiz. • Or wait 12 months and re-qualify with open book graded exam
