What you will need… • Headphones • Scavenger Hunt (in packet or downloaded from website) • Your class schedule • If you did not take EDUC 110 at Winthrop University please see me before you leave • If you have chosen to carpool, it is best to sit with your group while choosing a site.
Tips for Having a Great Service-learning Experience • When choosing your available time, make sure to factor in travel time. (Maps and directions to each school is on the website) • Familiarize yourself with what is available by looking over all tables before choosing a site. • If you do not have transportation, you can carpool or choose a site within walking distance (EbinportElem., Ebenezer Elem., Richmond Dr.) • Consider carpooling to one of the Fairfield county or similar district schools. Past students have had great experiences in these schools AND gas mileage is reimbursed!
More Tips! • NO choosing independent sites unless there are extenuating circumstances that you have discussed with your professor. • Be very clear when emailing a teacher about dates and times of visits • If a teacher has a block of time for their availability you do not have to visit that entire time • DO NOT wait until the last minute to contact your teacher! Start ASAP • If for some reason your assigned site does not work for your schedule contact me or your professor ASAP
Important Dates • In order to stay on top of your service-learning project, this timeline should be followed as closely as possible. • Email your teacher to set up your first visit within one week of receiving your placement • By your 2nd visit you should have chosen a student in or qualifying for special education to be your case study student. • On or before your 3rd visit you need to learn your case study student’s characteristic information and fill-in this information on the sign-up sheet
Sign-up Process • Today: Watch the PowerPoint video and complete the scavenger hunt • After Today: - You will find out your placement by going to ‘Site Sign-up’ on the EDUC 210 website and click on your professor and section #. - Using the sample email, email your teacher and mark on the sign-up sheet that you have established your first visit - Begin visiting your service-learning site - Remember to post your case study student information on the sign-up sheet
