2. Purpose of meeting • Introductions • Set the tone for the year • Look at pass and endorsement requirements • No subject changes possible w/o Dept approval • Any changes finalised tonight • Dept deadline – Monday 31 January • Stress urgency of final year

3. Matric Entries • Information on official computers – All on the central certification register • Subject changes virtually impossible • ID documents needed • Immigrants here less than five years • Concessions – unlikely

4. 2013 Targets • 100% pass rate • 90% Bachelor’s pass • Thank you, Class of 2012, for setting the bar so high!

7. MINIMUM PROMOTION REQUIREMENTS • English 40% • 2 Subjects 40% • 3 Subjects 30% • 1 Subject Fail • No 39’s to 40 or 79’s to 80!

8. Degree requirements – Bachelor’s pass • 4 “designated” subjects at 50% • All Northwood subjects are “designated” except Life Orientation • Individual University departments may have own requirements • Maths Literacy does not prevent University Entrance

9. TYPES OF MATRIC

SUBJECT LINKS • Maths for Maths based courses: e.g. Medicine, Engineering, Architecture, Commerce , Science • Maths Literacy for non-maths based courses: e.g. Humanities; Law • Physical Science for Engineering & Physical Science degrees as well as medical courses • Life Sciences for medical, biological & earth sciences • All other subjects will have career links but are not likely to be formal entrance requirements.

11. Maths 3 • Part of the normal Maths syllabus • Not included in the core syllabus for the first few years • DUT engineering now expecting it (Geometry) • Warning – ignore at your own risk • High flyers – it may get you in the paper! • I advise better Maths learners to enter it, you can always withdraw if necessary

12. Life Orientation • No final exam, only course work • Differences in University admission requirements • DO NOT take lightly and rely on passing all the others • Need for portfolio - incomplete = incomplete result • Need to participate in the physical component

13. Diploma requirements • Four subjects at achievement level 3 (40% or better) • Again, there may be institutional requirements • Some Universities lean heavily on their own admission tests

15. Year Mark • Importance • Weighting 25:75 • Continuous assessment • Compilation subject by subject • Absenteeism • Standardisation

16. School Awards • Another chance at School Academic Awards • First term-Second term-June-Trials • Ratio 1:1:3:5 • Internal use, for subject prizes etc • Cut-off targets - 85/80/75/70 %

17. Portfolios • Part of the CASS (continuous assessment) • Kept by the subject teacher • Must be available for inspection by the department at any time

18. Programmes of Assessment • Requirements subject by subject • Term by term • Penalties for late submission • Needs a team effort (school, learner and parent)

19. Extra Classes • Standardised Tests • Extra lessons • Definitely for strugglers, and for the ambitious • Maths, Physical and Life Sciences in particular • Can make all the difference

29. Conclusion • Our teachers are well prepared • The teaching year is adequate, but time is still short • NEED to use time effectively and take it seriously
