Minimum Requirements • 16 units completed (S) • 3 units of English group – one must be from 3 & 4 • ATAR requires both 3&4 • 3 VCE sequences of 3&4 other than English
Satisfactory VCE Unit Result • The student receives “S” for a unit when all the outcomes are achieved • A student must: • Produce work that demonstrates achievement of the outcome/s • Observe school and VCAA rules • If a teacher judges that all outcomes are achieved, the student satisfactorily completes the unit. • The decision to award an ‘S’ for the unit is distinct from the assessment of levels of achievement.
Basic Assessment Structure • School Assessed Coursework ( 20% - 50%) + • {School Assessed Tasks in Art, VCD, Food & Tech} ( up to 50%) + • Written Examination(s) ( up to 66%)
School Assessed Coursework • Between two and four outcomes • Set by the teacher • Work must be able to be authenticated by the teacher • Done in class, at a specified time • Student must reach an acceptable standard in ALL outcomes to pass subject
School Assessed Tasks • Usually a folio or design and production task • Assessed by the teacher • Subject to visitation by an external panel of assessors
Written Examination • Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Psychology and Accounting have exams in June and November • Specialist Maths and Math Methods have two exams in November • All other VCE subjects have one exam in November • All students do the GAT in June
Study Score • School based assessments are compared to written exams scores. • School based assessments will be brought in line with exam scores. [Good exam performance is important] • The final mark is converted to a mark out 0-50 with mean 30 and standard deviation 7
Study Score cont’d Number of students 9% 40 37 23 30 50 Study score
From VCAA to VTAC • VTAC scales Study Score • Scaled scores for English are added to the Study Scores for the next 3 best subjects • 10% of Study Scores for any 5th and 6th subjects are added into score • Maximum Score is 210
VTAC produces ATAR • The total scores are placed in order from 210 downwards • ATAR is a rank that states the % of students that scored less than the given student • Example; ATAR = 60.5 means the student’s total score was better than 60.5% of age group across Australia.
