Skeleton – provides a framework of support and protects internal organs • Humans have about 206 bones • Functions • Provide support of the muscles, fat, and soft tissue • Protect the internal organs • Provide leverage for lifting and movement through the attachment of muscles • Produce blood cells • Store the majority of the body’s calcium supply

  3. Divided into 2 sections • Axial: main trunk – skull, spinal column, ribs, sternum • Appendicular – extremities, shoulder & pelvis

  4. Bones can differ between males and females • Men: bones are larger and heavier • Women: Pelvis is wider • Now let’s Color…..

  5. Types of Bones • Long Bones – length is greater than the width • Ex: Femur, humerus, radius • Short Bones – blocky bones that are closely joined • Ex: carpels, tarsals

  6. Flat Bones – Composed of 2 layers of compact bones with a spongy layer in between • Ex: Scapula, skull • Irregular Bones – complex shape • Ex. Vertebrae • Sesamoid Bones – small bones found within tendons • Ex. patella
