Campaigns • Noun; a series of military operations in a war • World War I and World War II both contained many separate campaigns.
Dictator • Noun; a ruler who has complete power • Dictators often use the military to maintain their dominance.
Direct Rule • Noun; the use of colonial officials to control a colony • The British used direct rule to keep control over most of India.
Economic Imperialism • Noun; the control of one country over another country through economic policies rather than military force • Great Britain and the United States used economic imperialism to gain influence in many Latin American countries throughout the 1800s.
Extraterritorial Rights • Noun; the rights of foreigners to be protected by the laws of their own nation rather than those of the host nation • In the 1850s, Japan agreed to honor the extraterritorial rights of foreign tourists and businessmen.
Imperialism • Noun; the policy of forming and maintaining an empire, usually by taking over foreign colonies • Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries European powers practiced imperialism in Asia and Africa.
Indigenous • Adjective; the original inhabitants of a region • Human beings are not indigenous to North America.
Indirect Rule • Noun; the use of local rulers to control a colony • The British used indirect rule to control the rural and remote parts of India.
Missionary • Noun; the people who traveled to other places to convert others to their religions • Many Catholic missionaries traveled to South America in order to convert the native peoples.
Monopoly • Noun; the areas in which only one government or company has the right to trade • Through imperialism, European nations attempted to establish monopolies on certain lands and resources.
Nationalism • Noun; a feeling of strong loyalty or attachment to a culture, language, and/or territory • In the United States we have a strong sense of nationalism.
Partition • Noun; a division • Land is often divided into many partitions which are each owned by different people.
