A prophet is a person who SPEAKS for justice. How are they chosen? • chosen from all walks of life to speak for justice • Experienced disappointment, suffering and persecution because of the messages they preached. What did prophets do in the bible? • Spoke on behalf of God to call people back to faithfulness • Hated any practice of religion not linked to working for justice • Read from the Old Testament prophets – find quotations that show this role.
HOW DO WE JUDGE A PROPHET? • What do we look for to know a person is a worthy prophet? • Name some prophets in modern times.
Criteria for judging a prophet: • Connects love of God with love of neighbour • Challenges the many evils of society • Encourages a new and better life • Provides insight into a society through trustworthy predictions • Personal life matches with what they preach
A quote that helps us understand the role of the prophet: • “Prophets comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable.” (Prophets comfort those who suffer and cause suffering to those who are comfortable)
