Past continuous tense We use the past continuous tense to talk about that were happening for some time in the past. We are having an English class now. We were having a Physics class at this time yesterday.
What were you doing during your winter holiday? (do our homework/read books/play chess/…) We were doing our homework during our winter holiday. What were your English teachers doing then? (read English books/ prepare lessons/…)
Task 1 We were writing a composition at this time yesterday. last month.
We make positive and negative sentences using the past continuous tense like this. I/He/She/It You/We/You/They was (not) singing. were (not) dancing.
---Was your father having a meeting at 3 o’clock yesterday afternoon? --- Yes, he was. --- Was your mother having a meeting, too? --- No, she wasn’t. She was discussing the project on travelling.
--- Were your parents watching TV at 8 last night? --- No, they weren’t. --- What were they doing then? --- They were reading newspapers.
We ask questions using the past continuous tense like this. Was he/she/it eating? Yes/No, he/she/it was/wasn’t. Were you/they/we walking? Yes/No,we/you/theywere/weren’t.
Past continuous tense with ‘while’ and ‘when’ What was your cousin doing when you got home yesterday? She was dancing to the music when I got home. = While she was dancing to the music, I got home.
I was chatting with my new friends while my parents were packing the luggage. = I was chatting with my new friends when my parents were packing luggage.

Grammar We use the past continuous tense to talk about things that were happening for some time in the past. When two long actions went on at the same time, we can use the past continuous tense in both clauses and ‘while’ to join them. When something else happened while a longer action was going on, we can use ‘when’ or ‘while’ to join the two actions. We use the past continuous tense for the longer action and the simple past tense for the shorter action.
