This project aims to develop a common authentication and authorization service for life science research, bringing together multiple research infrastructures to enhance collaboration and data sharing. The project focuses on various areas such as microorganisms, functional genomics, biobanking, clinical trials, and more. The project also addresses the authentication and authorization needs for different types of data, including sensitive human data. Additionally, the project explores cooperation possibilities among research infrastructures.

CommonAuthentication and Authorisation Service for Life Science ResearchMikael Linden, ELIXIR Finland
CORBEL project (9/2015-8/2019) Since 2015, thirteen ESFRI Research Infrastructures from the field of BioMedical Science (BMS RI) joined their scientific capabilities and services to transform the understanding of biological mechanisms and accelerate its translation into medical care. • microorganisms • functional genomics • highly pathogenic microorganisms • curated databases • biobanking & biomolecular resources • marine model organisms • structural biology • screening & medicinal chemistry • translational research • plant phenotyping • clinical trials • biological/medical imaging • systems biology
Different Life Science RI – Different AA needs Non-sensitive data • Moderateneeds for authentication and authorisation • E.g. EMBRC (marine), EMPHASIS (plant), Infrafrontier (mouse), ELIXIR… Sensitive (human) data • AuthN Assurance • What it means? • Authorisation • Data accessapplications • BBMRI, ECRIN, EATRIS, ELIXIR, EuroBioImaging, … Instrumentaccess • Schedulingaccess to physicalfacilities • Instruct, EuroBioImaging, EATRIS… footer

Usescenarios of a Life Science AAI • Producingresearch data (instruments, e.g. microscopes, genomesequencers) • Storingresearch data (data archives) • Transferringresearch data (to a computingenvironment, e.g. gridFTP) • Computingenvironments (e.g. clouds, computingclusters) • Collaborativetools (wikis, intranets, mailinglists)
History of the Life Science AAI • June 2016: CORBEL WP5 workshop on AAI • 2017: developingrequirementsspecification • 2018: pilotwith e-infrastructures in AARC2 project • 3/2019-: productiondeployment in EOSC-Life project
Requirements of the Life Science AAI • Seeourpaper on therequirements on the LS AAI • https://tnc18.geant.org/getfile/4229 • There is reallynothingspecific to Life Sciences! • Therequirementscouldapply to anyotherresearchinfrastructures • Potential for • Wider cross-researchinfrastructure collaboration • E-infrastructures to providefocusedservices
Pilotwithe-infrastructures 2018 • In thecontext of AARC2 project • E-infrastructures operating thepilotenvironment (EGI, EUDAT, GEANT)
Non-technicalconsiderations • Policies • For endusers (AUP) • For relyingservices (qualification, obligations) • Service management and sustainability • Fundingmodelafterthedeploymentphase • Bodies and procedures for decisionmaking • Operations (e-infrastructures) • Service levels • Data protectionmodel • Data controller/processor • Release to 3rd countries • Organisational and technicalmeasures • etc
