Investigating Influence of Meteorological Parameters on Atmospheric Electric Field Variations for Islamabad and Balakot,

This research project aims to observe and analyze the variations in the atmospheric electric field (AEF) for Islamabad and Balakot stations in Pakistan, with respect to meteorological parameters and aerosol concentrations during fair-weather days. The objective is to understand the diurnal, seasonal, and annual patterns of AEF and assess its correlation with weather conditions. The study also investigates the behavior of AEF in relation to solar and space weather phenomena, as well as potential precursors of enhanced seismic activity in the region.

  1. Investigating the Influence of Meteorological Parameters on Atmospheric Electric Field (AEF) Variations for Islamabad and Balakot, Pakistan Dr. SamiaFaizGurmani Senior Scientist Centre for Earthquake Studies, NCP

  2. OBJECTIVE and PROJECTS • Observing the variation in atmospheric electric filed of these stations with respect to meteorological parameters and aerosol during fair-weather days • Data Analysis of atmospheric electric field for Islamabad, Multan, Balakot and Terbella Stations, • Diurnal, Seasonal and annual observation of AEF for all station in Pakistan • Working on Thunder days Data base for Pakistan for WMO and to get previous Archived data

  3. ATMOSPHERIC ELECTRIC FIELD A region around a charged particle or object within which a force would be exerted on other charged particles or objects.

  4. GLOBAL ATMOSPHERIC ELECTRIC CIRCUIT • The movement of charge between the Earth's surface, the atmosphere, and the ionosphere is known as the global atmospheric electrical circuit. • Ionosphere acts as a positive electrode and earth as a negative electrode in global electrical circuit. • Circuit looks simple but shows complex variations with latitude, longitude, magnetospheric & ionospheric processes, also pollution and climate change

  5. APPLICATIONS • The Diurnal curves of Fair weather will be important to asses how the properties of GAEC vary as a function of time on different scales. • To study the behavior of the GAEC in relation to solar and space weather phenomena, e.g. Atmospheric electric field variation during total solar Eclipse. • To observe the short-term anomaly for the precursors of enhanced seismic activity in the region. 20. CONCLUSION • There is a strong positive correlation between the fair weather atmospheric electric field and temperature, while a strong negative correlation is seen between the fair weather atmospheric electric field and the atmospheric pressure, also the relative humidity • The seasonal variation shows that the values of atmospheric electric field in spring and winter are higher than in summer (monsoon) and autumn, which could be due to the systematic change in aerosol concentration and local variations of many factors. • The diurnal average curve of atmospheric electric field shows marked departure from the Carnegie curve, and is attributed to local effects that often mask the global signal. • Compared with other land-based stations, Islamabad clearly depicts a single morning peak and the difference of timings could be due to different latitude, climate, and meteorological parameters.
