Christ’s gifts • Reason for Spiritual gifts (v12): • To prepare God’s people for works of service • So the body of Christ can be built up • Unity in the faith and knowledge of the Lord (v13) • Maturity so that we won’t fall into deceitful doctrines (v14)

Roles Defined: • Apostle • A messenger, ambassador • Commissioned by Christ Himself • Refers to the original 12, Matthias (Acts 1:20-26), and Paul (Acts 9:3-20) • Used once to refer to Jesus (Hebrews 3:1) • Prophet • One who speaks for God and interprets His Will • Not necessarily telling the future, although they are used of God to do so • Used many times to refer to Jesus • Evangelist • A publisher of glad tidings, spreader of the gospel • Acts 21:8 (Phillip), 2 Tim 4:5 (Charge to Timothy) • The only one of these titles that does not refer to Jesus • Using the case of Philip (Acts 21:8), not given the authority or permanent position associated with the other offices
Roles Defined • Pastor • Shepard (John 10:2,11,12,14,16), Hebrews 13:20,1 Peter 2:25 • Refers to Jesus many times • Overseer • Teacher • Master, an instructor • Also refers to Jesus many times • 1 Cor 12:28-29
Unity • In the Spirit (v3) • Through peace (v3) • One Lord, one faith, one body, one baptism, one God and Father (v4)
