CXC Manager’s Status Report Chandra Users’ Committee Meeting Edward M. Mattison 29 June 2004
Topics • Program Level Status • Operations • Mission Metrics • Data System • Chandra Grant Awards CXC Status Report/CUC
Program Level Status • The spacecraft and science instruments continue to perform extremely well, and operations continue to be routine • Mission was halted twice due to solar activity, and loads were interrupted three times for Target of Opportunity observations • One minor anomaly occurred (details in Operations Status) • No safe modes have occurred since last report (last safemode 1999) • Science planning, data processing and data distribution are proceeding smoothly • Cycle 6 Peer Review was conducted 15-17 June 04; went very well • 15 press releases, 2 additional image releases and 2 SSUs in last 6 months • Independent Implementation Review (IIR) held 11/18/03 yielded no findings and 2 observations. We submitted a final response to Observation 1, on peer review security, and are completing a preliminary response to Observation 2, on EPO strategy. • Submitted financial Program Operating Plan in April 04. The budget & staff profiles are on plan through FY05. We are ready to absorb HRC, ACIS & HETG PI subcontracts 1 Oct 04. CXC Status Report/CUC
Operations Status • Spacecraft • Nominal winter eclipse season • EPHIN exhibited another brief occurrence of the supply voltage being current limited due to high temperatures (minor anomaly). In response, the temperature constraints used by mission planning have been tightened. A time-dependent maximum operating temperature is in the process of being implemented in the mission planning guidelines. • A diagnostic procedure was performed to test one possible cause of the stuck-on heater located on the Optical Bench Assembly in Zone 50. The power to a set of survival heaters, including the one in Zone 50, was turned off. After seeing no thermal response, the power was turned back on. The results indicated that the survival heater is functioning properly (i.e. it is not stuck on). The stuck-on heater is not causing a problem for operations. CXC Status Report/CUC
Operations Status (con’t) • Spacecraft (con’t) • Resumed performing angular momentum unloads by scheduling them in the weekly spacecraft command loads rather than initiating them from the ground during a real-time contact. • In response to the failure of the -Y shutter motor selection relay, we patched HRC safing stored command sequences to remove mechanism commanding, in order to prevent accidental shutter closure. • The on-board computer telemetry request list was patched to read the HRC anticoincidence shield and MCP event rates. This was a necessary step toward being able to use the HRC to monitor radiation in the event that the EPHIN instrument becomes unusable. • Implemented use of the Chandra Radiation Model for predicting operating times near the radiation belt entry and exit. The more accurate predictions are expected to add ~2 hours per week or ~375 ks per year of observing time. CXC Status Report/CUC
Operations Status (con’t) • Science Instruments • Science instruments are operating extremely well • Preparations for an ACIS bake-out are proceeding • HRC anticoincidence shield data are being examined as a function of radiation level in preparation for use in radiation safing in lieu of the EPHIN instrument CXC Status Report/CUC
