Kibera, Kenya: a case study • In today’s lesson you are going to put together everything you have learnt about global urban growth, the problems it creates in LEDCs & how these are being tackled. • On the following slides are a number of resources to use relating to Kibera, the largest shanty town in Africa, located in Kenya.
Your task: • Read the resources & watch the short films. • Produce a document (PowerPoint perhaps?) to show the following: • Where is Kibera & what are its key characteristics (population size, areal extent etc) • What are living conditions like here –housing, sanitation, infrastructure etc? • How are these issues being tackled? • Evaluate the solutions you identify.
The central business district (CBD) is at the centreThe better quality housing is around it - access to shops, cinemas, banks, offices.More good housing takes the best land - along a hillside or close to a beautiful view/park. Industry tends to develop in wedges along the main routes to the city. Older shanties have since been upgraded & have most essential services, e.g., clean water, sanitation & roads. Where do you find shanty towns? What are the problems and how can they be improved? Urban landuse
