  2. Editing for purpose

  3. Analysing the Edit: • What is the narrative function of the sequence? • What emotional response is it trying to achieve? • Who are we made/what are we made to identify with • How does it do this? • What role has the edit played in this? • Could it have been done differently?

  4. Psycho (1960) shower scene • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8VP5jEAP3K4 • Remember some of the techniques we’ve talked about over the last few weeks • How are some of these techniques used here?

  5. Useful Visual Grammar– Narrative Techniques • Shot-reverse-shot. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F-bsf2x-aeE When Harry Met Sally • Staple shot for many scenes! • Setting up a scene for s/rs • Match-Cut. • Compositional elements/objects match • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=leOzWXbQE9A 2001 Space Odyssey • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ypul7nPcMII Lawrence of Arabia (at 1m00)

  6. Useful Visual Grammar– Narrative Techniques • Eyeline-match • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lmDTSQtK20c Flight of the Conchords • Match on Action • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1eFdUSnaQM • Reaction Shot • Show emotion/identify with an ‘other’ • Esp in Comedy • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kr7djGY1fhA at 1m14

  7. Useful Visual Grammar– Narrative Techniques Cutaways- shots that are relevant to the scene, but not necessarily to the narrative function of the scene (ie showing reactions, or messages in the dialogue) • http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-12264194 • Common in news production. Often very literal. • Can be a good ‘safety’/’concealing’ alternative (for continuity)- always consider getting plenty of cutaways to give you options but be careful as they… • Can be very cheap!!! • Also known as ‘filler’, ‘B-roll’

  8. Useful Visual Grammar– Narrative Techniques Cross Cutting (Parallel Action)- cutting between scenes to induce a certain response (tension) • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CLcTKCRfryg (The Office) (4m30) • Are there any other ways you could do this? • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KQidFlpYlDw Timecode (2000) by Mike Figgis

  9. Useful Visual Grammar– Narrative Techniques • Montage (in modern sense)(seemingly unrelated shots that when combined produce meaning or a series of shots that lead the viewer to a desired meaning) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JU9Uwhjlog8 Team America Parody • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2PUFJmsCZLE Donnie Darko End • Thought Provoking- often done to a song • Signals Passages of time, of achievement, • Tying up multiple narrative elements

  10. Useful Visual Grammar– Narrative Techniques • Jump-cut (a cut that breaks the continuity of time, or the traditional spacial continuity of the edit) • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=diNUplP7GZ8 Breathless (1960) Jean-Luc Godard A rule that is frequently broken!

  11. Useful Visual Grammar– Narrative Techniques • Sequence shot- where a whole sequence occupies a single shot • A flashy example: • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p2YelaGi5kM Kill Bill Vol 1 • Camera doesn’t have to move though! • Orson Welles also uses this a lot (See Citizen Kane)

  12. Useful Visual Grammar– Narrative Techniques • Fades, Dissolves and Transitions: • Fades generally denote a change in time and/or space in film • Other transitions include effect based: • Wipes • Interstitials (ie Football) • Play around/Experiment in FCP • Use them carefully. • Avoid cheap wipes and effects! Unless you know what you are doing! • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VnixMJvOtpI

  13. Useful Visual Grammar– Narrative Techniques • Relational Editing- editing shots together to suggest a relation between their ideas • Sans Soleil (Chris Marker) • We (www.weroy.org) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=chVD8NprL3E • More Essayistic!

  14. What role did the editor play here? http://www.bbc.co.uk/filmnetwork/films/p004pb5n Salaryman 6 (2002) Dir. Jake Knight

  15. Colour Grading http://exposureroom.com/members/hdcolorist/e0a252ae61bb44dea381a8a6222cb86e/ http://vimeo.com/7214459 Another tool in the editors palette Links to get you started Colour grading in FCP http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=06E1E8C167A18AC0

  16. Titling and Graphics • Simple is always best (white on black) • Don’t use crappy fonts! • Bad titles are a brilliant way to make your video look amateurish. • Simple moves (panning and scanning/fading) can be very effective • Could you do it in camera/live • Find fonts in Dafont: http://www.dafont.com/ • More advanced graphic techniques require compositing software (Boujou, After Effects, Combustion) • http://www.creativereview.co.uk/cr-blog/2009/july1/film-titles-list - check it out!

  17. Cheating the edit Tips If in doubt copyhttp://vimeo.com/19447662 (at 3m 40) - Everyone does it! In reality- things don’t always go to plan in production- • Not all edits are deliberate, some are there to patch up mistakes (continuity, script, no handles) • Faking multiple angles (pan and scan) http://vimeo.com/18014288 • Changing time/Time-Remappinghttp://vimeo.com/7152403 • Get lots of non sequential cutaways

  19. Remember Technique, Craft and Art (Dancyger) • Technique- Technology and Language • Craft- Using Editing for Storytelling • Art- Using Editing for Emotion

  20. The process of the edit Where are you at? • Logging Rushes and Deciding on Shots - EDL • Capturing and Digitizing • The Assembly edit (based on storyboard/script) • The rough cut (reconsideration of the narrative approach/experimentation in editing technique) • The final cut • Mastering
