Where does District Assembly fit in? • The opportunity to hear for 2011 - 2012 • the RI Presidents message • the plans of RIBI as expounded by the District Governor • the plans of District 1080 as discussed today • To start planning for Club Assemblies [most Clubs hold them in May and June] RI RIBI 1080 Club

Where does District Assembly fit in? • The chance to share experience and best practice • The opportunity to learn about new initiatives • The opportunity to meet fellow district officers • The opportunity for District to identify where it best can help Clubs – e.g. seminars/workshops • Are projects limited because of lack of resources/ experience? • Are there new initiatives you would wish to see?

6. Some Clubs with falling membership are finding increasingly difficult to maintain activities and seek new opportunities WE HAVE TOO MANY PROBLEMS!! AND OPPORTUNITIES ARE NO WHERE BE FOUND TO

12. RIBI ASSEMBLY 25th – 27th March – Key Initiatives London 2012 • Already 4 National Teams will have their training camps within our District • Can we provide support for overseas Rotarians and others visiting UK for London 2012?

RIBI ASSEMBLY 25th – 27th March – Key Initiatives • How would we respond to assist statutory emergency services in the event of a disaster? • what expertise have Rotarians? • manning registration centres REMIT FROM RIBI GENERAL COUNCIL “Develop a contingency plan to assist Statutory Emergency Services in dealing with the aftermath of disasters.” However: District Governor Elect Tom wishes to discuss this further in District Executive before full implementation. But we should start to identify expertise we already have

RIBI ASSEMBLY 25th – 27th March – Key Initiatives • London 2012 • Resilience • Rotary Spring Clean RIBI Initiative • In Suffolk we have related project “Don’t be a Tosser” • Involve Rotarians, families, friends in cleaning up countryside • Equipment provided by Local Authorities • Being trialled in some areas • Plan for a Rotary Day of “Spring Cleaning” in 2012 - successor to Focus on the Crocus

Background: Moser report 1997 • Some 7 million adults in England - one in five adults • if given the alphabetical index to the Yellow Pages, cannot locate the page reference for plumbers. • One in five adults has less literacy than is expected of an 11-year-old child. • The situation for numeracy is both worse • Estimated that over 30% and may be as much as 50% have numeracy problems. • although data for numeracy is not as robust

Ambition for 2020 • 95% of adults to achieve functional literacy and numeracy, • (up from 85% and 79% respectively in 2005). • Level 1: GCSEs, O-Levels or equivalent at grades D-G; • Level 2: Five or more GCSEs, O-Levels or equivalent at grades A*-C; • Level 3: Two or more A-Levels Guilds • Levels 4 & 51stand 2nd Year of BA, BSc, BEng (etc) or 1st and Final Year of Foundation (Fd) Degree • Level 6: Final Year of Bachelor Degree • Level 7: Higher Degree: MA MSc, MBA • Level 8: PhD • 90% adults qualified to at least Level 2 (69% in 2005) • 68% adults qualified to at least Level 3 • 40% adults qualified to at least Level 4. (29% in 2005)

How are our clubs helping with Literacy? • Replies from clubs at end of literacy month: • Dictionaries 4 Life – sometimes as presentations to groups of students, sometimes as prizes to individuals • e.g. Felixstowe Clubs give Dictionaries to all Year 6 students • Youth Speaks – sometimes as a competition, sometimes as a certificate for all. • Helping classes at infant / primary schools with reading, some involve wives / partners • Youth drop-in centre • Making large-print books available When is Rotary Literacy Month????

25. Where to next? • In District 1080 we are evaluating: • “Is the Dictionaries4Life project making a difference?”. • Felixstowe Clubs have given Dictionaries4Life to all year 6 students in the area • Provides a unique opportunity to investigate how effective project has been • Follow-up research with Secondary School Students on the extent to which they are using Dictionary. • RESULTS WILL BE PUBLISHED IN DUE COURSE

District 1080 Initiatives for the Environment • Rotary Spring Clean District 1080 has 135 miles of coast line and numerous miles of river banks/ Broads etc etc A critical issue is the waste/ litter discarded on our beaches and in countryside – often through a lack of awareness of the impact. 34. Recycling Opportunities Look out for recycling opportunities which also make money. • Save paper & reduce landfill • Promotes Rotary • Raises funds for Foundation On sale for £2-50 per pack or special offer at Assembly -- 5 packs for £10. All profit goes to Rotary Foundation

35. District 1080 Initiatives for the Environment • Getting the best out of FITs: Save Money? and the Planet • Demystifying RHIs and get paid while your are heating your home? • Is your business ready for CRC? Can we help by giving advisc to Rotarians or more generally to the public at large?

36. Joined up Rotary: serving Communities and the Environment • Along with District 1240, District 1080 is the driest part of UK, and there are increasing pressures on water resources. • Essex and Suffolk Water Initiative via their CSR Budget.

37. Essex and Suffolk Water want to partner Rotary to promote these water saving kits among general public What is required? Get public to sign up for kits on form A simple exercise working with the community and gaining publicity for Rotary Clubs MUST be based in E&SW area, but signees on form can be outside. Clubs outside area could partner a Club within.

District 1080 Initiatives for the Environment • There are some good Environment initiatives within District 1080 • But nothing has been put forward from this District for the RIBI Rodney Huggins Environment Award for many years. • Have you thought of entering your Club or sponsoring a School or Rotaract Club for a Rodney Huggins Award? Projects include: • Recycling Schemes, Nature/Wildlife Garden Projects (sensory gardens), War Graves Restoration; Carbon cutting in a Club Deadline is January 2012

40. How can District help on the initiatives in 2011 – 2012? • We are creating a database of current and desired initiatives so that • We can help clubs planning new initiatives with experience from other clubs • Experiences can be shared and the benefits to the Community will be greater than the sum of our individual initiatives. Now its over to you • Would seminars on any of the topics covered by beneficial to your Club or initiatives you might have with the general public? • Using Questionnaire 2 as a guide – identify where you would like to see help

What other activities should District 1080 focus on? • What particularly significant projects in Community and Vocational Service within District 1080 should we promote? • Are there any areas that we should encourage RIBI to adopt for the future? • Should we consider supporting (both financially and through service) a single District Wide Project for one or two years and then move on to another one? • Would such single larger projects have more prominence in publicity terms?
