  1. Tropical Africa and Asia 1200-1500

  2. Tropical Lands and Peoples • Tropics – falls between the Tropic of Cancer in the north and the Tropic of Capricorn in the South • Wet and dry seasons dictated by winds known as monsoons • While parts of tropics get abundant rainfall (West Africa, West-Central Africa, southern India) there are arid zones (Sahara) • Altitude also affects climate (higher = cooler, shorter growing season)

  3. Human Ecosystems • Some areas developed without developing agriculture (areas with abundant fishing or herding) • Vast majority of people of the tropics did develop farming

  4. Water Systems and Irrigation • Many farmers in South and Southeast Asia used slash and burn agriculture • Tropics have uneven rainfall – tropical farming societies constructed dams, irrigation canals, and reservoirs. • India, Cambodia, and Sri Lanka – mobilized vast resources to construct and maintain large irrigation and water control projects but the were vulnerable to natural disasters and political disruptions. Smaller, village based projects were easier to maintain and provide stability

  5. Mineral Resources • Tropical peoples used iron for agricultural implements, weapons, and needles. • Copper was important in Africa to make wire and decorative objects • Africa was also know for its production of gold. • Metalworking and food producing systems mobilized the labor of ordinary people to produce surpluses
