A New Approach to Developing Postgraduate Research Skills For Busy Medical Registrars: Is an online approach up to the challenge? 5th Annual Teaching and Learning Conference Colleen Aldous 26 September, 2011
The context • MMed degree – new challenges • Current situation
The problems • Mentors may not be well equipped for research • Time constraints • Geographically distributed throughout all the academic hospitals
What do MMed students need? • They need to know what’s happening • They need tailored ‘how to’ information
A look at theories… • Instructivism • Constructivism • Social Constructivism
A look at theories… • Experiential learning • Reflective learning • Situated learning
A look at theories… • Anchored learning • Community of practice • Co-operative learning
My theory… • The ‘ablutionist’ theory • Aldous,C., Rheeder, P. & Esterhuizen, T. 2011. Writing Your First Clinical Research Protocol. Juta Publishers. Cape Town
An Online learning site! The answer! • Solves the problem of geographic distribution • Solves the time constraints issues of the students • Is a one-stop-shop for everything to do with the MMed and the research process
The design Two sections – • a course • admin and communication, • Communication – with me, with each other, with themselves • Admin – Official stuff, merely a repository of information
The course Instructivist Management } Community of practice Constructivist and Experiential learning Reflective learning 16 Units in total
Problems experienced • The Moodle site is not always accessible to students • How does one get the buy in of the students? Is it just too early to tell? • Do we need to give them some incentive?
The way forward • Research; theories and what others have done • Develop the course further and provide bi-weekly group supervision (hybrid teaching) • Monitor and compare the progress of students who follow the current MMed rules only and those who do the course in addition (possible publication)
