  2. APPLES Archaeologist have evidence of people eating apples as far back as 6500 BC. The apple was perhaps the earliest tree to be cultivated and its fruits have been improved through selection over thousands of years.

  3. APPLES Apples were brought to North America with the colonists in the 1600’s. The first apple orchard was said to be near Boston in 1625. Today thirty-six states grow them commercially. Top producers are Washington, New York, Michigan, California, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

  4. APPLES Apples grow in temperate regions of the world where the average winter temperatures are near freezing for at least two months. Apple tress are deciduous. They blossom in the late spring and produce pollen and nectar. Bees cross pollinate the blossoms producing fruit which matures in the autumn.

  5. APPLES There are many varieties of apples. Each type is grown for its different qualities. Some are good to eat fresh while others are good for baking in desserts, pureeing into applesauce, dried, preserved into apple butter or jelly, or made in juice or cider.

  7. APPLES Apples are rich in antioxidants and fiber. They are a source of potassium, iron, calcium and vitamin A. The average American eats 65 pounds of apples per year.

  8. APPLES At least 55 million tons of apples are grown worldwide each year with a value of $10 billion. China produces 35% of this total. The United States is the second leading producer providing 7.5% of the total. Iran, Turkey, Italy, Poland, Russia, and India also add to this volume.
