Reconstruction Ends • 1876 Election was too close to be decided by the electoral college • Compromise of 1877 • House of Representatives decided the President – Republicans made a deal with the Democrats • Republican would win President – Hayes • Southern Democrats get . . . • Remove the federal army from the south • South would receive grants and loans to build railroads • South would receive federal money for reconstruction • Hayes had to appoint a democrat in his cabinet • Democrats promised to respect African American civil and political rights – YEAH RIGHT!
