Chapter 15 By Sabrina and Deborah
Summary • Amir travels back to Pakistan after a call from Rahim Khan, who is ill and wishes to see him. Pakistan has changed in many ways since he was last there. When he sees the condition of Rahim Khan he is shocked and as his appearance has changed dramatically due to his illness. Amir learns about the terrible work of the Taliban and the Northern Alliance. He found out that the Taliban destroyed his fathers orphanage. The chapter ends with Rahim Khan who is going to tell Amir aboutHassan.
Structure • The story leads on from the last chapter so there is fluency between these two chapters. • Starts with detailed and lively description of Peshawar- setting • This Chapter has a constant referral to past events from the points of view of Amir and Rahim Khan: • Memories of Hassan p170 • Refers back to last time he had seen Rahim Khan p171 • Soccer game story where Rahim was hit with a Kalashnikov • The Northern Alliance movement • The Taliban kicking out the Alliance • Orphanage being destroyed by the Taliban • Shows how Afghanistan has changed since Amir has left • At the end of the Chapter we learn why Rahim Khan wanted to see Amir- to reveal ‘everything’ about Hassan. The chapter is the beginning of Amir’s journey back to Afghanistan.
Language • Bustling atmosphere in Peshawar reminds Amir of his childhood • ‘The bustle of the city blurring past me reminded me of a busier, more crowded version of the Kabul I knew…where Hassan and I used to buy chutney-dipped potatoes and cherry water • Childhood nostalgia fits in with the rest of the chapter (visiting Rahim Khan for the first time) • Reminded of the Afghanis less fortunate than Amir and Baba - ‘…kids with dirt-caked hands selling cigarettes’ • Description of Rahim Khan • ‘…a thing made of skin and bones pretending to be Rahim Khan opened the door’ • All that Amir has known from his childhood has changed • Suffering has effected everyone in different ways • Blood imagery • ‘ “I was old enough to be his grandfather and I was sitting there, blood gushing down my face”’ • ‘When he spat into his handkerchief, it immediately stained red.’
Form • This chapter is a catalyst for the resolution- Amir goes back to native country to start the process of redeeming himself • ‘ “I want to tell you about him. I want to tell you everything. You will listen?”’ • The first time he hears what has happened to Hassan • Moral challenge for Amir
